TAV Broke Grounds For The New Izmir Airport Domestic Terminal

Following the international terminal, TAV commenced the construction of the Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport new domestic terminal, of which it won the operation rights for 20 years at 610 Million Euros plus VAT. Planned to be built with an investment of 250 million Euros, the environmental-friendly terminal will be equipped with the latest technology and a capacity to accommodate 25 million passengers.

One of the world's leader corporations in the industry of airport construction and operations, TAV Group laid foundations for the construction of the new Domestic Terminal at Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by many congressmen, bureaucrats and managers including the Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communication Binali Yıldırım, State Airports Authority (DHMI) General Manager Orhan Birdal, TAV Airports Chairman of the Board Hamdi Akın and TAV Group CEO Sani Şener.

Speaking at the ceremony, The Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communication Binali Yıldırım said "Today we're celebrating the beginning of an important service at Izmir airport. We decided, made our plans and we're realizing this investment without any expenditure from state budget. The period between the declaration of this project and the start of the construction is just one year. We're acting fast, because Izmir is preparing for two giant events: Firstly the 2020 Expo organization and secondly the 100th year of our republic. With this new terminal Izmir will be the second biggest hub in Turkey, after Istanbul".

DHMI General Manager Orhan Birdal said "We're already excited about the new domestic terminal at Adnan Menderes Airport, which will integrate to the international terminal and create a modern airport that will add great value to Izmir. With this project which involves the lease of the international terminal as well as building and leasing of the new domestic terminal, we'll be able to create a huge influx to the economy to the amount of 860 million Euros, without any expenditure on from state treasury. I heartily thank our Minister of Transportation, Binali Yıldırım for his continuous support as well as TAV, which will realize the project and everyone else who had worked on this project".

TAV Group CEO Sani Sener said "Today, we initiated the process for creating a contemporary, comfortable and attractive airport that Izmir deserves. Along with the international terminal that we have been operating since 2007, the new domestic terminal will connect Izmir to Anatolia. This 250 million Euros worth investment will make Izmir the gate to the Aegean region, enabling it to realize the potential it has. Recently, Izmir has been the scene of intense activity with our government's support. We hope that the number of passengers will increase rapidly through this new domestic terminal that we plan to complete and open within a short period of time. We thank the Ministry of Transportation and DHMI for creating the basis for this important infrastructure project."

Gate to Anatolia

The Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport Domestic Terminal is planned to be completed by TAV Construction in 2014. New terminal building will be able to provide service to 25 million passengers annually with a 200 thousand square meters indoor area. The project also involves a 2537 vehicle capacity closed car park and 3 thousand vehicle capacity open car park.

Main features of the terminal will be:

  • . 64 check-in counters
  • . 40 lifts
  • . 30 elevators and 666 meters of conveyors
  • . 5 thousand baggage capacity per hour
  • . A total of 291 bin 267 square meter construction area

Having submitted the best offer at the tender initiated by DHMI on November 17th, 2011, TAV affiliated company TAV Ege won the operation rights of the domestic terminal until 2032 at 610 million Euros + VAT. Following the takeover of the operation by TAV Airports, the domestic flights were moved to the existing international terminal as from the beginning of the New Year to accommodate the work to be carried out. According to data issued by DHMI, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport provided service to 8 million 794 thousand 401 passengers last year with an increase by 11 per cent. There are currently direct flights to 87 destinations in 31 countries from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport.

Environmental-friendly building

Being awarded as the most environmental-friendly European airport for its international terminal operated by TAV Airports, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport's new domestic terminal has also been designed to serve the same purpose. The technologies to be employed such as heat pumps, rainwater harvesting systems, gray water reuse system, solar collectors and tri-generation plant will minimize the energy and water consumption as well as providing an efficient waste management.

The terminal building will provide a unique experience to passengers both functionally and aesthetically with sharp and contemporary lines, indoor gardens and pools, large yet plain internal areas. Passengers will be able to see the parked aircrafts, the apron and the planes taking off even from the check-in lounge. With 29 meter vaulted roof, the terminal was designed to have a consistent appearance with the international terminal that it will adjoin to.
