Izmir Has Got Its New Domestic Terminal

Adnan Menderes Airport new domestic terminal is inaugurated. TAV completed the new terminal in 21 months with an investment of 266 million Euros.

Constructed by TAV Group, one of the world’s leader corporations in the airport projects and operations sector, Adnan Menderes Airport new domestic terminal is inaugurated today. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications Lütfi Elvan, State Airports Authority Orhan Birdal, TAV Airports Board Chairman Hamdi Akın and TAV Airports CEO and President Sani Şener as well as many congressmen, bureaucrats and politicians.

TAV Airports CEO and President Sani Şener Şener said "Today, we are inaugurating Domestic Terminal of Adnan Menderes Airport, which will be one of the most important terminal buildings of the region together with its connection to the international terminal that was also previously built by our company. Airports are the indications of the development level of the countries, as they are communal places. I believe that an airport, having LEED Certificate and using information technologies in the most possible way, is a very good representative of our country. As a company, we have never been after financial profits without considering our country's interests and social benefits. We will continue to consider these values during operation period as we did during the construction period. I would like to thank particularly our Prime Minister, and also Ministry of Transportation, State Airports Authority executives and employees, General Directorate of Civil Aviation, Local Authority of Adnan Menderes Airport, our project owner Professional Architect Yakup Hazan and the financing agencies the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Denizbank, Unicredit, Black Sea Trade and Development Bank and Siemens Bank. I congratulate all engineers, architects, technicians and workers contributed to the project and also TAV Construction, which finished the construction sooner than the required completion period, and which is elected as the second largest airport construction company of the world by ENR, one of the most prestigious engineering magazines of the world, following American Brechtel. I wish that this terminal will bring favorable opportunities and prosperity to Izmir."

TAV will operate the terminal until 2032

Having submitted the best offer at the tender initiated by DHMI on November 17th, 2011, TAV affiliated company TAV Ege won the operating rights of the domestic terminal until 2032 for 610 million Euros + VAT.

The foundations of the new terminal were laid on June 15th, 2012. During this transition period, domestic flights were launched at international terminal, which is also operated by TAV.

TAV gained the operating rights of international terminal in 2007. Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport provided services to almost 10.2 million passengers in 2013, by an increase of 9 per cent compared to the previous year. 2.5 million of these passengers used international flights and 7.7 of them used domestic flights.

Turkey’s largest domestic terminal

Constructed by TAV Construction, the new domestic terminal will have an indoor area of approximately 200,000 square meters. The project involves a 2537 vehicle capacity closed car park and a 3 thousand vehicle capacity open car park.

Main features of the terminal are:

  • 64 check-in counters
  • 40 elevators
  • 30 escalators and 666 meters of travelators
  • 5 thousand luggage capacity per hour
  • A total of 291,267 square meter construction area

Environmentally friendly, award-winning terminal

TAV Airports developed all design, construction and operation phases of the new airport within the framework of environmental sustainability policy.

Complying with the "Waste Management Implementation", 99 per cent of the wastes generated during the demolition of the old terminal were reused or recycled. This implementation received “Innovative Sustainability Practices Reward” given by Sustainable Development Society (SDK).

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification application for Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport New Domestic Terminal and Multi-Storey Car Park was made in December 2012. ADB New Domestic Terminal will be the first airport terminal in Turkey having LEED certificate.

Whilst the heat pumps, rainwater harvesting systems, graywater reuse system, solar collectors and trigeneration plant minimize the energy and water consumption, they will accommodate a much more efficient waste management. Terminal has a trigeneration plant, which generates heating and cooling energy during power generation.

Modern architecture

The terminal building will provide a unique experience to passengers both functionally and aesthetically with sharp and contemporary lines, indoor gardens and pools and spacious internal areas. Passengers will be able to see the parked aircrafts, the apron and the planes taking off even from the check-in lounge.

With 29 meter vaulted roof, the terminal was designed to have a consistent appearance with the international terminal that it will adjoin to.

There will not be a security check with x-ray devices at the entrances of the airport, which is chosen as pilot scheme airport, after necessary permissions are received.
